DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with heavy hearts & humble acceptance of God's will that we announce promotion to glory of Kimani Karangu of Atlanta, Georgia which occurred on Sunday 02/21/21 after a short illness. Beloved husband to Judy Karangu, dearest father to, Maina Karangu, Mwangi Karangu, Shiro Karangu & Josiah Karangu. Brother to Wambui Gakere, James Karangu & David Karangu. Precious son to Isabella Karangu and the late Mwangi Karangu.

 

Eulogy

Kimani Karangu was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, and grandfather. His journey began on November 17th, 1962 in Mankato, Minnesota. He was the third born son to the late Dr. Mwangi Karangu, an economist, and Ms. Isabella Mwangi, a nurse. At a very young age in 1964, Kimani moved back to Kenya from the United States and attended Kangema Primary School before advancing to Kiaguthu High School. It would not be long before he decided to return to the U.S. to pursue an education and live out his American dream.

 

In May of 1982, Kimani arrived in the United States where he became a student at Morgan State University, the same school where his father taught economics. In order to capture his ultimate goal, he started from very humble beginnings as a young adult in Baltimore, Maryland. His first job was as a dish washer at IHOP. He was also employed at Memorial Stadium, a football complex that hosted sports teams in Baltimore.

 

In 1986, Kimani graduated with his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting from Morgan State University. As he was pursuing his degree, he met his wife, Dr. Njeri Thuo Karangu. The couple eventually got married in 1993 after graduation. Kimani continued his education at the University of Hartford in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated with a Masters in Business Administration.

 

His first job in the real world was as an accountant at an insurance company in Hartford. Afterwards, he joined his wife in Atlanta, Georgia, the city that would become his home for the rest of his life. As he changed locations, he also decided to pivot into a new career as a realtor. He joined Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Brokers as their associate real estate broker. Two and a half years ago, Kimani would continue to pursue a career in real estate under the same title at Atlanta Communities Real Estate Brokerage. He made his mark becoming one of the most successful realtors of African descent in the metro Atlanta area.

 

In 2003, Kimani faced a difficult circumstance when his wife was diagnosed with stomach cancer. After months of treatment and care, Dr. Njeri Thuo Karangu passed away in November 2003. Despite the heartbreaking turn of events, Kimani continued to live life to the fullest. He delved deep into a spiritual journey and helped found Kenyan American Community Church in Marietta, Georgia where he served as treasurer.

 

Kimani would soon find love again and married Judy Karangu on October 17th, 2011. He spent the rest of his days continuing to succeed in real estate, vacationing around the world, and doing his part to make a difference for the Kenyan community in Atlanta. He was one of the most selfless people you could ever meet and was full of positive energy. Anyone who met him could tell you he was one of the happiest and most jovial people in the world. He knew how to dress nice, loved dancing, and was a big fan of sports, such as baseball, wrestling, and football, especially the Atlanta Falcons.

 

In his leisure time, Kimani was an avid golfer who also enjoyed going on walks, grilling nyama choma, and fishing. He also watched shows like “Jeopardy!,” programs about the wilderness, and The History Channel. He was passionate about staying informed and watching the news daily.

 

Kimani went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 21, 2021. He is survived by his wife Judy Karangu, his children Maina Karangu, Mwangi Karangu, Wanjiru Karangu, and Josiah Karangu, his daughter-in-law Anne Mugo, and his grandchildren Christopher Karangu and Charles Mugo. He also leaves behind his mother Isabella Mwangi, stepmother Anna Karangu, his siblings Elizabeth Gakere, James Karangu, David Karangu, Dr. Caroline Waiyaki and Irungu Karangu, as well as his uncle Macharia Karangu. He was also a cousin and uncle to many. Kimani was preceded in death by his late wife Dr. Njeri Thuo Karangu and his late father Dr. Mwangi Karangu.
